Bohag Bihu: Lifeline of Assam
Bohag Bihu is not just a festival celebrated for couple of days a year but it is a centuries old sentiment keeping the people of Assam united. Assam is beautiful state in North East part of India full with lash green forest,blessed with fertile soil of mighty Brahamaputra, known best to the world for the One Horned Rhino and Tea.
When it is celebrated ?
The celebration starts on the last day of Assamese year which is also known as Vishuva Sankranti continues over a week in the month of Vaisakh or locally 'Bohag. In Julian calendar the date varies year to year but falls between 13 and 15 of April every time. It is not a time bound festival. All begins with bathing domestic animals like cow , goats etc in the morning of first day and ends with preparing local cuisines like XATXAKI ( It basically a mix fry of 101 vegetables) on the seventh day.
Where it is celebrated ?
Every bihu is celebrated across the entire assam and Bohag bihu is no difference. Although some of regional rituals and transitions got amalgamated with Bihu adding more diversity to it but most of it remain same for centuries.
